Travis Johnson began his fly fishing career at the ripe old age of 12. He was that kid who could not learn enough about anything and everything to do with fly fishing.
Travis landed his first Deschutes red-side at age 14 and his first summer steelhead at age 16. His passion for fishing with a fly has taken him all over the country and his wisdom of fishing the western United States surpasses most young men his age.
Having guided the Sandy, Clackamas and the Deschutes Rivers for over 6 years, Travis has learned how to find even the toughest of fish with success, while bringing an infectious energy to the game that will leave you invigorated and inspired.
From a day of chasing wily resident trout to learning in one of his advanced Spey casting classes, your day with this young man will not soon be forgotten.
If you have any questions on the availability of a trip or casting class with Travis Johnson, call The Fly Fishing Shop anytime between 6″00am & 6:00pm at 503-622-4607 or (800) 266-3971. Travis Johnson is both student and instructor in the art of fly casting. He is a member of the prestigious Carron competition Spey Casting team. Last year he placed second at the CLA World Championships held at Blenheim Palace. Winner of the event was Carron team member Gerard Downey, with a magnificent cast of 70.63 meters (231.7 feet). Gerard is now the current World Champion. The team is based out of Invergordon, Ross-shire, Scotland. It has dominated the Spey distance events for the past eleven years and has 12 world Championships to its credit. This team has won more events than all of the rest of the competing teams combined and Carron fly lines hold all of the Spey Casting distance records Most of the 6- members are Scottish. Gerard and Raurri are Irish, and of course Travis resides right here in Oregon, USA. As a matter of fact he grew up in Brightwood, just down the street from The Fly Fishing Shop, where he is currently employed in several capacities, including fishing guide and fly fishing instructor. He practices distance Spey Casting several times a week and regularly achieves casts of 150-200 feet with either hand.
The video below was shot adlib while fishing. Nothing was staged or scripted. Everything was shot with a hand held pocket camera. We hope you find it entertaining and informative.

Josh Linn: Full Day Inquire for Price:
jlinn@gloomis.com
Growing up I started fishing with my family. I learned from my father and grandfather. We had a lot of good experiences. As I got older I started going to the Deschutes. I met a guide over there, Doug Cook. He was an extremely good fly tier and an amazing fly fisherman. Honestly I didn’t really know that much about fly fishing. But that was all about to change. Doug took me under his wing and taught me everything he knew. I was trained in the art of tying flies, fly fishing and rowing drift boats. I became his chauffeur for about 5 years. I learned the Deschutes river like the back of my hand. During this time I was kindling a relationship with my best friend Marty Sheppard. Marty and I started fishing together. In the late 90’s Marty introduced me to a Spey rod and It has been down hill ever since. Marty and I started guiding for John Ecklund of Little Creek Outfitters. Over the past couple of years I have guided all over the Northwest. Bass and Steelhead on the John Day, Trout and Steelhead on the Grand Ronde, Whitewater rafting in Hells Canyon, Steelhead on the Sandy, Clackamas, And Klickitat. And most recently in remote Alaska on the infamous river X, the Sandy River, for Steelhead and Kings. My passion is for catching anadramous fish on a swung fly. Most of the waters I guide are perfectly suited for a spey rod. Like most fisherman and guides I have a passion for photography and developing flies. Fly Fishing seems to be a hobby inside of a hobby. There are many aspects of Fly fishing. Maybe you tie flies, trout flies or classic salmon flies, maybe you even build your own presentation hooks, you could wrap you own rods or even build bamboo rods from scratch. You can get as much out of Fly fishing as you want to put into it. Josh is also giving lessons on Sunday. Email him at jlinn@gloomis.com for mare details
Tom Larimer Full Day Inquire for Price:
tom@larimeroutfitters.com
Tom Larimer owns and operates Larimer Outfitters out of Hood River, Oregon. He calls the Deschutes River home from the beginning of salmon flies in May until the weather gets too cold to Spey cast in November. His steelhead jet boat camps are legendary. Once the snow flies, Tom’s focus shifts to guiding the winter steelhead rivers of northern Oregon. Depending on the conditions, you might find him floating the Sandy, jet boating on the Clackamas or hiking into the Hood.
Tom has lived and guided in the Oregon since 2001. Before moving to the Northwest, he guided the world famous upper Kenai River in Alaska, the fabled steelhead & trout waters of Northwest Michigan, and the rivers he learned to fly fish on in Wisconsin. His seventeen years of guiding experience have given him a patient and enthusiastic teaching style while on the water or when giving clinics. However, Tom’s passion goes beyond just teaching casting or fishing techniques. He loves to share lessons on the history, the flora and the fauna of his home waters.
Outside of guiding, Tom is one of the most revered Spey casting instructors in the country. He teaches private lessons near his home in Hood River as well as numerous group clinics throughout the country. His teaching style revolves around the family of lines he designed for Airflo Fly Lines. His contributions to the Spey world include the Skagit Compact, the Skagit Switch, the Skagit Intermediate and the Rage Compact.
Finally, Tom is a professional fly tier, photographer, author and hosts trips to some truly amazing fly fishing destinations. Additionally he is a pro-staff member for Simms, Hatch Reels and Solitude Flies. As a man who makes his living from a natural resource, Tom is a steward of the water and her fish. He is a member & supporter of the Native Fish Society, Trout Unlimited and Oregon Water Watch.
