It seems a lot of Spey style patterns today are quite gaudy like the popsicle. I tend to be drawn to the vintage patterns. Do you like the new flashy Corvette's or the classics with chrome bumpers. I thought I should back up and start from the beginning. Tying with Bronze mallard can be frustrating. It seems the best approach would be to get a full skin and go from there. I think most packaged BM is to big, if you don't tie the feather at the grey base the feather want's to split. Russ

I'm not sure if you are right or wrong on the mallard being to long ,I have found it to short or bent to hell. I did experience that if you don't lay the thread in just the right area the feathers will tear off during casting and fishing. I do like my mallard to extend to a certain spot on the hook but everyone likes things a bit different in their bugs. Im a big fan of Dee flys as well ,there is just something ( kind of like stepping back in time ) when you hook and land one on a classic. I like tube flies as well and how versatile they are.

People that know me know how jazzed up I get on receiving tugs on traditional styles. I usually fish a newer style fly right off the batt. After one fly or pull on a leech then I usually switch over to a spey or dee. These are great.

I think too it depends on the tier, some tier's have a greener thumb then others. For me it seems the farther I stay away from the brown stuff the better the out come. I was lucky enough to have a friend who butchered a couple Mallards for his supper so I took the feathers.

It's definitely tough to beat a tug on a classic pattern, but I do like fishing a variety of flies depending on conditions. Sometimes I just feel like fishing something I haven't tried before. I do like the combination of flashy corvette's and chrome bumpers though. A little new and a little old......kid of like including ice dubbing or krystal flash in a married wing.

Thanks. My connection to anadromous fishing is the flies. The catching can be some what limited so I make up for it by having fun tying the flies. I got into fishing the two hander just a couple seasons ago. I felt compelled to tie a few Spey style flies to go along with it. I find the history of it all very interesting. Russ

Beautifully tied speys! I enjoy tying and fishing both traditional, as well as more modern type flies.

I think it's a good idea to learn how to tie these classic flies. It keeps us connects to the past, which I think is a good thing. Russ
