Everyone, I am wondering if any or all of you have seen the proposed changes for the Fishing regulations that (if passed) will take affect October 1 2014. Here is a link to the proposed reg. changes. www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/91959.htmlMy only concern is that some of the wording is not up to par on some of the new regs, but I agree with their intent. Thoughts??

I am disappointed not to see any mention of reducing the limit on steelhead/rainbow trout for Lake Ontario from 3 fish to 1 fish (like it is for the tributaries). Recently the Canadians have reduced their creel limit on Lake Ontario for steelhead down to 2 fish and I was hoping the NYSDEC would follow suit. No matter how the DEC spins the data you cannot convince me that allowing lake anglers to keep 3 steelheads is not reducing our chances of catching large 4 and 5 year fish in the tributaries. My e-mails to DEC fisheries staff about this have been largely ignored.

Good point on the creel numbers. I pretty much have written that one off until the numbers that are returners to the tribs are on a decline for a few years. But at the same time, with the past few years of great King fishing in the lake, the targeting of Steelhead has been down, but I really don't think that the numbers that the DEC presents are really that accurate since they are targeted specifically in different areas of the lake.... Like Browns in the west are etc.

Am I reading this right? They are proposing the use of 1/8 oz jigs as flys in the fly zones! Don't we have enough people foul hooking fish?

NO they are clarifying the use of Jigs (not in the fly zones) as 1/8th or less for the centerpin guys since there is a technicality that as of the letter of the law as the book is written, they are not legal. This is a clarifying statement only

Not that there would be much difference between Jig & a weighted fly if the Jig met the artificial fly definition of being materials tied onto the hook! The number of foul hooked fish in the zones are far too many already.

The fly zone in Altmar is a joke ,I've seen people snag fish there far to much, I don't even fish there it is such a joke and somewhat not really fishing if you ask me. Keeping a fish to eat once in awhile is ok but lets be for real does anyone really need three fish a day? I can see if someone is poor and needs to feed their family but most people who are out there are sport fishing. What is the purpose of three fish?

Problem with lake fishing is people pay alot of money to go out on a charter & expect to bring home fish for their money. They don't look at it as sport fishing but an adventure that they want their money's worth. So the state see's it this way because the charters do too. Agreed, the petting zoo, upper & lower are an insulting joke to anyone that that cares about the fishing as a sport. They should ban the use of any added weight all year & only alow sink tips from September-April. Like that would ever happen. lol

deecaster777 you are spot on i fish there all the time an in September through October these people think its there super market its kinda disgusting, plus these fish have high mercury content so its not really good for you to eat them anyways.. so yeah i think its a great idea, id like to see the sportsmanship come back there get rid of all the idiots.
